Chronic back pain may be lessened by "retraining" the brain to connect with the back. People's quality of life can be enhanced by learning how to manage their body's pain, process sensory data from their backs, and move their backs while performing activities.

Chronic back pain sufferers can gain from "sensorimotor retraining." with a 12-weeks course. After the course most of the people said that their quality of life had improved, their backs felt better, and they were happier.

"Due to the fact that twice as many persons experienced full recovery, it appears that these effects were long-lasting. The trial's participants reported higher quality of life one year later, despite the fact that very few therapies for low back pain had long-term benefits.
